The Reality Of Being An Artist
The reality for the artist is that, even if you are incredibly talented, you will struggle to earn enough money to live from your art. Sadly, this is something that most artists simply ignore when starting out. They think that talent on its own is enough to get by. Not true. As any successful artist knows only too well, these is another side to being an artist and that is operating a business. The dream is this: to sit in the studio with your favourite music playing, creating incredible works of art which people are queuing up to buy because they are just so progressive. In fact, there are so many customers that you barely get off the phone before it rings again… Unfortunately, this is not the case for most people. You can sell two hundred paintings one year, and then sell five another. The worst part of it is that you can’t predict sales, and your style of work may fall out of favour at any moment. There doesn’t even need to be a reason; in simple terms, it can not be explained and the best you can do is make sure that you find a healthy balance between painting what you love and producing what sells. But then again, it isn’t all about the money (although you will probably be spending more time with independent financial advisers uk then you would have liked): many artists work a part time job and paint the rest of the time. That way, they aren’t relying solely on selling their work, and it takes some of the pressure off. That means that they are happier, and, in turn, they do better as a result. But the key is business. Make sure that when you start painting for a living you treat it no different to any other job, and with that attitude you should never go far wrong.
