Yeah, Yeah, Mr Tambourine Man Yeah!
Ah, the simple things: give me them over the complexities of modern-day life any day! One of the simplest things in the world, I suppose, is jamming with friends. My only problem with that is that I can’t play any instruments, which is a sort of spanner in the works when it comes to jamming with mates. But before I go any further, I’m not going to insult my parents – who created me and no doubt passed some musical instrument playing DNA down to me – and say that it’s because I have no musical talent. I do think I have some, but the truth is simply that I don’t have the time for yet more things. I wish I did, but the fact is that I don’t and won’t for some time.
This was the point I posed to my brother the other day; I was at his house and he was jamming with friends. I was trying my best to listen to what he was trying to say to me, but Alan Partridge was on the TV and what a distraction that man always is.
Suddenly, the TV turned off. “Oy!” said my brother, “come and jam with us, play the Tambourine or something, OK?”
I shrugged and gave it a go; my first attempt at being Mr Tambourine man. Nothing happened at first. Then, a couple of minutes in, something strange happened…out of nowhere…I started to ENJOY myself and feel the rhythm! Before I knew it I was one of the gang and highly important, they couldn’t do without me!
I learnt that day that perhaps there is an instrument I can play after all. I’m never going to be a musician, really, but that doesn’t stop me from having a go, does it?
